HOUSES OF WORSHIP
Of all the forms of architecture, the residential house is the one that arouses the most profound emotions; it reveals the most personal expressions of our intimacy and offers refuge, escape, and above all day-to-day experiences. The custom-made home, the house rigorously faithful to our desires is thus a great dream and is, for many, the object of sacrifices. Similarly, for the architect, the residential house has a particular resonance. The commissioning of a house requires a strong personal investment, establishing a unique bond between the client and the architect, a long-term collaboration… sometimes easy and harmonious, sometimes tense and trying. Designed by the greatest architects from around the world, the hundred or so houses presented in this book are as many unique adventures and stories. However, they also constitute a world heritage, and summarize the essential principles of architecture itself. This selection of emblematic houses represents a wide geographical, chronological, thematic and stylistic range. Houses such as Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater House, or Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House are thus landmarks in our understanding and appreciation of 20th- century domestic architecture .
